A chinese proverb, "the fish will be the last to discover the water" seems to capture some of my thoughts on individual development. I take the saying to mean that sometimes it takes someone, or something, to draw our attention to something we are so deeply involved in; something we just do inherently or take for granted, to enable us to recognise it's value, or not; to check that it is still helpful and relevant or not. By creating a greater awareness of ourselves we are able to achieve the goals we set out to achieve.
People development, to me, starts with the individual and the relationship they have with their environment. I believe people need to take ownership and responsibilty for their own development; I work with individuals who want to make a change; and I help leaders create a learning environment where people are actively encouraged to develop.
When appropriate, I use a number of recognised tools and processes to support the learning and development process; e.g. SHL assessment, aptitude and personality tests; Learning styles; KenBlanchard programmes; Coaching models.
People can get themselves into a pattern of doing things the same old way; this gets the same old results. There is so much literature on what makes a great leader, a leader's 'must have' characteristics, how to become a great leader; every business magazine tells us what we have to do to be a successful leader - it would seem there is no excuse not to demonstrate great leadership. So why is there so much research that concludes employees feel their leaders do not demonstrate great leadership? Read more
There are many tools and processes that support organisation and people development, and psychometrics and apptitude testing are only some of them. These tools are as good as how you use them. I have heard of many stories ending in people going miles out of their way due their reliance on their SatNav system - I think this is how I view these tools; they give valuable information that could improve the learning and development process; and it is how the information is interpreted and used that is critical...
